Hi Frank

Thanks for posting. Sorry you are having problems.

Your VSS subsystem has become unstable and locked Windows. Unfortunately, if this happens then there is no graceful way to exit other that to power down. This situation is extremely rare.

Are you running Windows XP? If so, please see this KB article:

Thanks for getting back to us.

It wasn't necessary to reinstall XP. The purpose of a system image is that you don't have to re-install Windows. I suspect that when you re-installed XP, partitions were created with a slightly different offset.

This will prevent incremental images from appending to an existing backup set as the drive layout has changed since the set was created.

Please create a new 'Full' image and subsequent 'Incremental' / 'Differential' images should append without a problem.

If you continue to have problems then please edit your XML file and re-select the disk and partitions.

XML backup definitions are just instructions for repeating backups. The files should be stored on a local disk and should not be saved to the backup target drive. The default location for backup definitions is: 'c:\<USER DOCUMENTS>\Reflect'.

Glad its working. BTW, there is a Reflect boot repair command on the rescue CD.

I've changed 2 of my PCs to SSD and didn't have any problems at all.

Reflect will ensure the partitions are aligned for the SSD.

TRIM should get enabled when the SSD is detected but you can verify it or if necessary, set it with the following commands:

fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

It will give you one of two results, either a 0 or a 1. A zero indicates that TRIM is enabled correctly, a one means that it is not. If you have a TRIM-compatible SSD, but find that Windows 7 hasn't enabled the command, you can easily do so by running this command:

fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0

I believe this works with Win8 also but Win8 apparently is more SSD aware than 7 so it is less likely not to be set. (My Win7 system was OK)

Hello kAlvaro,

In the past I have run into similar issues. One of my solutions was to copy and paste small chunks of directories within the mounted backup image to my new computer's hard drive. Occasionally I had to resort to copying a single file at a time. But doing so obviously is time consuming. So give the following two solutions a try:

Solution 1:

-- Temporarily disable your antivirus program(s) since all you are doing is copying files and since it is assumed that the files which you want to copy have already been scanned by your antivirus program(s).

-- Close any non-needed programs which are running in the System Tray.

-- Then try copying the files.

Solution 2:

-- Temporarily disable your antivirus program(s) since all you are doing is copying files and since it is assumed that the files which you want to copy have already been scanned by your antivirus program(s).

-- Close any non-needed programs which are running in the System Tray.

-- Use the free version of ViceVersa to copy the files and folders in the mounted backup to the new directories on your computer's hard drive. The cool thing about this method is that whenever the copying fails, you can then close ViceVersa and then relaunch it so that you can then continue at the point where the copying failed. ViceVersa will even copy files which, at the point of failure to copy, were not fully copied since ViceVersa by default indexes the timestamp and file size of each file**.

** NOTE: If you want to preserve the original timestamps of the folders which ViceVersa copies to the new destination, then you will have to configure ViceVersa's Preferences to do so. Most people don't care, but some people do prefer to have ViceVersa copy the timestamp for when the folder was originally created so that they know that they created such-and-such folder on this or that specific date.

I hope that this helps.

Best regards,

Good luck on your business trip, but I hope no one else will be using that machine while you're away. With results like that I would suggest very strongly that you create a backup image of that entire drive (all partitions) as soon as you possibly can after running chkdsk /r to deal with the bad sectors. And I would further suggest that you replace that drive as soon as you can thereafter. Relying on its longer survival as a repository for anyone's valuable data in the circumstances is just not worth the risk.

I get an icon at the right of my system tray when a scheduled (or any) backup is running. However, depending on how that icon is set up in Windows, it may be hidden. You may need to click the little up arrow on the system tray to show hidden icons (and then unhide it so it always shows on the system tray).

I have done all of the recommendations I have (i.e. chkdsk, etc) and I am still unable to backup the 2 partitions on a discrete hard drive. On my last attempt I receiver the error message "Backup aborted! - Unable to read from disk - Error Code 2 - The system cannot find the file specified." again. when I looked at the event viewer I received the following:

"Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A critical component required by the Volume Shadow Copy service is not registered. This might happened if an error occurred during Windows setup or during installation of a Shadow Copy provider. The error returned from CoCreateInstance on class with CLSID {e579ab5f-1cc4-44b4-bed9-de0991ff0623} and Name IVssCoordinatorEx2 is [0x80040154, Class not registered

I don't know how to proceed from here.

Well, I'm two years younger (73) and certainly don't consider myself any kind of "geru", but maybe I can help with at least some of your questions and uncertainty about restoring backup images.

First of all, fully restoring any complete backup image of one of your computer's drives will replace everything on that drive with whatever is contained in the backup image. If the drive involved is the one on which your computer's operating system is located, restoration would also include replacing the operating system along with all of the other files on that drive.

In other words, restoring a complete backup drive image puts everything on that drive back to exactly the way it was at the time when the image was created. There are ways to restore only single partitions or even just single files, but they are largely irrelevant to your actual intention of reverting your computer to its previous (Windows 7) operating system.

So, to answer directly your question about "the Programs [you] made with win8.1", they certainly will not be included in the Win7 image restoration. You can backup and restore the data files (documents, images, etc.) that you created under Win8.1, but any newly installed application programs would need to be installed again (assuming compatibility) under the Win7 OS.

It's essentially the reverse of the situation discussed in the "Can I transfer my programs and files to a new computer?" article at http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50212.aspx.

Hi Smitty870,

Thanks for posting.

Imaging memory cards and USB drives is not supported due to the drive geometry limitations of the devices. Splitting a completed disk images is not supported. However you can set a file size for your images. (an image will be split into files of this size)

http://www.macrium.com/help/v5/Other_tasks/Defaults_dialogue/Backup/File_Size.htm

You can use a file and folder backup to backup the data on these devices.

Can't help you with exFAT partition questions but is your concern about creating an image that is over 4GB and FAT32 needs to split the file? If so, as far as Reflect goes, it is not an issue at all and the program knows there are slices and will correctly assemble them. I admit that having a long list of 4GB files is not great though but you could setup a folder scheme but it is more work.

If exFAT is not an option for use with Reflect and you want to store non-Reflect files greater than 4GB, you could partition the drive to have a FAT32 for images and an exFAT for other files.

Hopefully you will get a better answer that offers more convenience.

Hi

The Free version supports cloning but the clone will only boot when installed in the original computer. If you change your motherboard or install into a replacement computer you will probably need to run ReDeploy to insert new drivers into the operating system. ReDeploy comes with the Professional and Server editions of Macrium Reflect.

Hope this helps

Please try the following steps:

1) Run chkdsk /R on your problem drive (I:) - /R is important.

2) Perform a clean boot. Performing a clean boot should help eliminate any 3rd party applications that may be interfering.
