It turns out that my old Dell has a PATA hard disk with Dell's adapter that plugs into a SATA port. Swapping out the hard disk for an unused SSD prior to the demise of XP seemed like a good idea, before I investigated the details.
But the truth is, I don't really need more speed for the XP dependent software. So I've decided, the best approach for me, is to leave my old, stable XP machine alone. But I did do all the "final" MS XP updates yesterday.
