If adding the hub puts a lot of USB cable into the connection you can try shorter USB cables.
You can try turning on file caching for the USB drive in Windows' Device Manager but if you do this you have to ensure you use the Safely Remove Device feature in case some data is still cached and needs to be written to the drive.
