I see the same problem backing up thus:
Vista laptop -> wireless -> Windows 7 machine -> USB disk drive

The laptop is 8 feet from the wireless antenna, with excellent signal.

I found nothing in either machine's event log.

And of course the destination USB drive shows up just fine on the laptop's Windows Explorer.

From a posting in topic "Reflect v4/File Backup/Windows 7 - Network name no longer available", November 03 2009:

...created a new entry in the registry that is supposed to keep connections open:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet services LanmanWorkstation Parameters
KeepCon REG_DWORD FFFFFFFF

Also, from http://kb.parallels.com/en/115737
To solve the problem, increase the SessionTimeout value in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters Please note that 65535 is the maximum value

There is no SessionTimeout in my registry on either machine.

There is a posting at

This posting refers to KB297684 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297684).
That KB article discusses "autodisconnect", but it might apply only to 2008 File Server. (On the other hand, I suspect amateurs are managing Microsoft's software, so there might be some undocumented timeout that defaults to a tiny number in non-Server systems.)
