I tried mounting a complete image from a BD-RE. It does work. As long as the entire image file(s) fit on an optical disc, mounting the image works from the optical drive.
However, as I said, I wouldn't recommend this unless there's no other option. I would guess it would put a lot of strain on an optical drive to read data in this fashion, especially if there's a lot of it. Plus, there would be wear put on the disc, too.
